You can skip the Berkshire Art Museum without FOMO. But this spider is 20 ft long and the foam is dirty white. Before items in the 5,000-square-foot exhibition space at Hotel Downstreet are packed up and stored, we decided to take a tour of the museum and see what is in the collection. It bubbles up up irregularly and adheres well. NORTH ADAMS Facing the loss of its space, the North Adams Museum of History and Science is closing indefinitely, taking with it pieces of the city's past. Think of a large wire frame, like a six or seven-legged spider, covered in spray foam that is used to fill cracks. In the basement there were sharply geometric painted forms from Rudd’s earlier work that had some interest, but many just seemed large.įinally, the many “ontogens” or structures of alleged primitive life forms, just were repulsive. The large melted plexiglass sculptures in the main exhibit looked just like relatively formless melted plexiglass that had accumulated lots of dust. This did not evoke the Gates of Hell in any way. The annex was filled with primitive sort-of human forms in garish colors hanging or supported in various ways dimly lit. We were certainly prepared for unusual but engaging and skilled sculptures. We had just seen the Mass MOCA and Clark exhibits the day before. And the outdoor forms, so-called ontogens.

The Clark's original white marble Museum building has been brought into this new century by architect, Annabelle Selldorf, whose mission was to "make the museum space better without anyone noticing." What one notices are the deeply hued gallery walls and standout French Impressionist collection that includes over thirty Renoirs, some Degas, Monet's, Manet's, along with classic American artists and a selection of Renaissance and Religious pieces. Surrounded by meadows, reflecting pools, hills and trails, the Clark Center, linked to the renovated Museum Building via a granite and glass walkway, is a visually pleasing addition to the landscape. The new Clark Center building, designed by Japanese Architect, Tadao Ando, practically disappears into the hillside. The reopening of The Clark in July 2014 after a $145 million dollar expansion and renovation made international news, especially after it garnered a positive and prominent Arts Section review in the New York Times. North Adams has the distinct advantage of being located in the Berkshires (which means it’s surrounded by mountains and offers plenty of outdoor adventure options) and is home to the largest contemporary art museum in the United States (meaning artists flock to the city and add to its vibrant culture). The harrowing story of the building of the Hoosac Tunnel is recounted in the excellent Heritage Gateway Visitor's Center, located in the former Boston and Maine freight yard, and is a great way to round out a visit to North Adams.Ĥ. It took over two decades (from 1851-1875), and much loss of life (over 200 men died, mostly from nitroglycerine explosions), but this feat of engineering remains, at 4.75 miles, the "longest railroad tunnel in North America east of the Rocky Mountains".
Civil Engineers of the day devised a way, without computers or machine drills, to blast through 25,000 linear feet of dirt and rock (working from each side of the mountain), meeting in the middle with a total alignment error of less than an inch. North Adams would have never been a mill-town in the first place if it weren't for the brave men who engineered, blasted and constructed the Hoosac Tunnel, which connected Boston to Albany via this section of Massachusetts. Getting people from Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art to the downtown has been a goal since the museum opened more than two decades ago.
